The Log Lady Tee

I made this digital collage back in 2018, after watching Twin Peaks: The Return, and I've been wanting to turn Margaret into a t-shirt for some time. Now felt like the really right time to finally bring this to life, as we float between the recent loss of David Lynch and the upcoming annual Twin Peaks Day on Feb 24--the day Laura Palmer's body is found, Special Agent Dale Cooper arrives, and we are introduced to most of the characters of Twin Peaks, including the Log Lady.

After we first see her flicking the lights and shushing everyone at the town hall, each episode that follows begins with Margaret Lanterman, with her serious disposition, as she gives a sort of philosophical monologue or sermon to bring us into the world of Twin Peaks, guiding us through the mysteries unraveling beyond the "whodunnit." She and her log are often a source of comedic relief, easy to dismiss as a harmless little quirk. But as the story builds, her log offers a connection to the wisdom and warning hiding in the haunted woods that surround the town.

We see her for a brief moment in Fire Walk With Me, face to face with Laura Palmer on the night of her death. She puts a hand to her forehead and gently says, "When this kind of fire starts, it is very hard to put out." She is probably the only person who truly senses how vulnerable Laura is in that moment.

25 years later, the Log Lady calls Deputy Chief Hawk. Few words are said but they understand each other. He listens patiently to the messages she felt compelled to share on behalf of her log as usual, and also from her self. In the chaos of season 3, she brings us back to the core of why we're here. She says. "It is a story of many, but begins with one - and I knew her. The one leading to the many is Laura Palmer. Laura is the one."
